I'm not waiting on him to die because life is soooo much more important than a game, but I do hope that he relinquishes the majority of his duties to Stephen at some point, who will in turn bring in a real football mind as GM. This is a more realistic solution. I don't see Jerry carrying all the responsibility that he has now into his later years.

Then I misinterpreted. I just saw the part about jerry not giving up reins and waiting out father time in the original post and it seemed very "pro jerry death" which isn't cool

Well, Cindy - he played with Jimmy at Arkansas in the mid-sixties.

He's just had a hard life, you know.

I think the more pressing question is what happens when Jerry does finally step down, either voluntarily or not. Who will take his place? Many assume it will be Stephen and that's a fair assumption. Of course, this lends itself to a multitude of speculation.

Stephen's primary titles include COO, Executive Vice President, Director of Player Personnel (respected salary cap guru). NO GM EXPERIENCE. Will Stephen bring in a GM? Will he assume the role of GM? Has Jerry mandated that all Cowboys operations, including who is GM, fall under the Jones' family umbrella? Questions to ponder. Any hope for a change in philosophy as it relates to talent evaluation and acquisition will be in the hands of Stephen.....maybe. Stephen has learned "Cowboys' business" from Jerry. Is that good or bad?

Jerry has said that a succession plan is already in place, should he (God forbid)) die tomorrow, there is no need for panic. The people who will take over are already onsite. I take that to mean that every change will be a change from within. No huge shake up or change in policy, philosophy, or procedures. He has stated that he cannot envision the Dallas Cowboys being owned by any other entity other than the Jones family (see succession plan). EVER.

Will things get better after Jerry is out of the equation? It is not a given.

I think Stephen is amenable to bringing in someone from the 'outside'.

If that's your plan you're in trouble. The son isn't going to be any better than the father.

You'll have 2 or 3 more decades of the exact same type of ownership even after Jerry steps away.
